ApconiX Welcomes Dr Sean Brennan

Sean Brennan

ApconiX is delighted to welcome Dr. Sean Brennan who joins us as a Senior Scientist and will be working with Dr. Michael Morton, Co-founder and Director of ApconiX and Head of the Ion Channel Laboratory.

Academic Career

Sean studied Pharmacology for his undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester, where he later completed a PhD researching the role of Kv7 ion channels in pulmonary arteries. After graduating, Sean obtained a first postdoctoral position at the University of Leicester, working on a drug discovery project that involved ion channel screening against both hERG and target ion channels. His expertise expanded through several research contracts, including cardiovascular research characterising Kir6.1 ion channels in ventricular cardiomyocytes, and investigating how acute glucose affects ion channel function. Sean later worked at the University of Liverpool, where he aided the development of DeepChannel, an AI-assisted single ion channel analysis tool. This research led him to direct the ICURe Discover programme for DeepChannel, where he conducted market research to evaluate its commercial potential.

Working at ApconiX

Reflecting on his academic roles, Sean realised it was the drug discovery projects he enjoyed most, prompting his transition to industry. Sean was familiar with ApconiX’s reputation and had previously met team members including Mike Morton, Kimberly Rockley, Hannah Jennings, and Magali-Anne Maizieres at various symposiums. Sean was drawn to the company’s friendly atmosphere and the diverse mix of routine ion channel screening and research projects offered. As part of the laboratory team, Sean will contribute to ion channel screening services and assay development. He will also collaborate with the ApconiX Safety Science group to bridge the gap between electrophysiology laboratory work and advanced analytical approaches.

Dr Michael Morton commented, “Sean’s extensive background in patch-clamp techniques, combined with his drug discovery experience, makes him an invaluable addition to our team.”

Interests Outside of Work

During a recent career break, Sean spent time working on various home improvement projects, demonstrating his DIY skills (“or lack of”, he joked). Living by the sea, he and his girlfriend enjoy spending quality time with Fred the dog, walks along the beach, and cooking together.
